The Philosopher’s Library Support

Welcome to the official support page for The Philosopher’s Library.

This guide explains how to use the app’s library, reader, search, bookmarks, study notes, audio narration, Apple Intelligence Passage Guide, 24-hour preview, and Lifetime Access purchase.

Getting Started

When you first install The Philosopher’s Library, you receive 24 hours of full access to the complete app.

During the preview, you can:

  • Read every included philosophical work
  • Search the entire library
  • Bookmark individual passages
  • Create study notes
  • Share notes and your complete notebook
  • Listen to works using text-to-speech
  • Use the Apple Intelligence Passage Guide on compatible devices
  • Explore philosopher biographies and historical portraits

After the preview ends, the app displays the Lifetime Access screen. A single non-consumable purchase permanently unlocks the app. There is no subscription.

Reinstalling the app does not necessarily restart the 24-hour preview.

Using the Library

The Library is the main screen of the app. Works are organized by philosopher.

The current collection includes works from:

  • Plato
  • Aristotle
  • Marcus Aurelius
  • Confucius
  • Augustine of Hippo
  • Friedrich Nietzsche

Open a work

  1. Select the Library tab.
  2. Find the philosopher you want to study.
  3. Tap a work.
  4. Select a book, chapter, or section.
  5. The selected text opens in the reader.

View a philosopher’s biography

Tap the philosopher’s name or the Biography link in the Library.

The biography page includes:

  • Historical portrait
  • Lifespan
  • Philosophical tradition
  • Expanded biography
  • Works available in the app

Tap a work on the biography page to begin reading it.

Continue Reading

After opening a work, the Library may display a Continue Reading entry.

Tap it to return to your most recently opened work and section.

Using the Reader

The reader displays each work one paragraph at a time, with study controls beside individual passages.

Change the text appearance

Tap the Aa button in the reader toolbar.

You can adjust:

  • Text size
  • Serif or system font
  • Light theme
  • Sepia theme
  • Dark theme
  • System theme

Your reading preferences are saved automatically.

Move to the next paragraph

Tap Next Paragraph near the bottom of the reader.

The reader will:

  • Advance by one paragraph
  • Scroll the selected paragraph into view
  • Briefly highlight it
  • Update the audio starting position

Move between sections

Use the Previous and Next section controls where available to move through the current work.

Share a section

Tap the Share button in the reader toolbar to open the iOS share sheet.

You can send the text to compatible apps such as Mail, Messages, Notes, or other installed applications.

Searching the Library

Search works across the complete collection at the paragraph level.

Search for a word or idea

  1. Select the Search tab.
  2. Enter a term such as:
    • Justice
    • Virtue
    • Soul
    • Wisdom
    • Happiness
  3. Review the matching passages.
  4. Tap a result.

The reader opens the correct work and section, scrolls directly to the matching paragraph, and highlights it.

Search troubleshooting

If no results appear:

  • Check the spelling.
  • Try a shorter form of the word.
  • Search for one important word instead of a complete sentence.
  • Remove punctuation.
  • Clear the search field and try again.

Search is not case-sensitive.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks save exact paragraphs for future reference.

Add a bookmark

  1. Open a work.
  2. Locate the paragraph you want to save.
  3. Tap the Bookmark icon beside it.

A filled bookmark icon indicates that the passage is saved.

Open a bookmark

  1. Select the Bookmarks tab.
  2. Find the saved passage.
  3. Tap it.

The app opens the source text and jumps directly to the bookmarked paragraph.

Remove a bookmark

Tap the filled Bookmark icon again, or remove the bookmark from the Bookmarks screen.

Bookmarks are stored locally on your device.

Study Notes

Study notes attach your own comments directly to specific passages.

Add a note

  1. Open a work.
  2. Find the relevant paragraph.
  3. Tap the Note icon beside it.
  4. Enter your note.
  5. Save it.

The note remains connected to its original philosopher, work, section, and paragraph.

View your notes

Select the Notes tab to open the Study Notebook.

Each entry displays:

  • Work title
  • Section title
  • Original passage
  • Your study note
  • Date last updated

Tap a note to return to its original passage.

Edit a note

Open an existing note from the reader or Study Notebook, make your changes, and save it again.

Delete a note

Swipe on the note or use its available context menu, then select Delete.

Deleted notes cannot be recovered.

Share one note

Swipe or press and hold a note, then select Share Note.

The shared entry includes:

  • Work and section
  • Original passage
  • Your note
  • Last-updated date

Share the complete notebook

  1. Open the Notes tab.
  2. Open the menu in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Share Notebook.
  4. Choose a destination from the iOS share sheet.

The export combines all saved study notes into one organized text document.

Audio Reading

The app can read philosophical works aloud using the device’s text-to-speech system.

Start listening

  1. Open a work and section.
  2. Move to the paragraph where you want narration to begin.
  3. Tap the Speaker button.

The active paragraph is highlighted, and the reader follows along as narration advances.

Audio controls

Depending on the current state, you can:

  • Play
  • Pause
  • Resume
  • Stop
  • Advance to the next paragraph

If you tap Next Paragraph while narration is active, the audio restarts from the newly selected paragraph.

Audio troubleshooting

No sound

  • Increase the device volume.
  • Confirm that audio is not being sent to Bluetooth headphones or another AirPlay device.
  • Stop narration and start it again.
  • Close and reopen the reader.
  • Restart the app.
  • Restart the device if the problem continues.

Narration starts from the wrong location

Tap Next Paragraph until the desired passage is selected, then press Play again.

When opening a search result or bookmark, wait for the app to jump to the highlighted paragraph before starting audio.

Two voices appear to be speaking

Tap Stop, leave the reader, return to the section, and start narration again. If the issue persists, force-quit and reopen the app.

Apple Intelligence Passage Guide

The Passage Guide helps explain difficult philosophical writing using Apple’s on-device Foundation Models.

It is designed as a study assistant, not as the historical philosopher speaking directly.

Ask about a passage

  1. Open a philosophical work.
  2. Find the paragraph you want to study.
  3. Tap the Sparkles button beside it.
  4. Choose a suggested question or enter your own.
  5. Tap Ask AI.

The app supplies the selected philosopher, work, section, and paragraph as context.

Suggested study tools

The Passage Guide can:

  • Explain a passage in modern English
  • Identify its main argument
  • Define important philosophical concepts
  • Create a concise study summary
  • Generate three study questions with an answer key
  • Respond to your own passage-related question

Writing effective questions

For the best results:

  • Ask one clear question at a time.
  • Keep the question directly related to the selected passage.
  • Avoid extremely broad requests.
  • Ask for concise explanations when studying a difficult paragraph.

Examples:

  • “What is the main claim of this passage?”
  • “Explain this in modern English.”
  • “What concepts should I remember?”
  • “Give me a modern example of this idea.”
  • “What is the strongest objection to this argument?”

Apple Intelligence is unavailable

The Passage Guide requires:

  • A device compatible with Apple Intelligence
  • Apple Intelligence enabled in device settings
  • A supported system version, language, and region
  • Any required Apple Intelligence models downloaded to the device

If the feature remains unavailable:

  1. Open the device’s Settings.
  2. Check the Apple Intelligence settings.
  3. Confirm Apple Intelligence is enabled.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi and power if models still need to download.
  5. Restart the device.
  6. Reopen The Philosopher’s Library.

Apple Intelligence availability is controlled by Apple and may vary by device, language, system version, and region.

Context-window warning

If you receive a message that the passage and question are too long:

  • Shorten your question.
  • Ask about one idea at a time.
  • Choose a shorter paragraph.
  • Use one of the suggested questions.
  • Close the Passage Guide and try again.

AI-generated explanations can occasionally be incomplete or inaccurate. Students should compare important claims with the original work and trusted academic sources.

The 24-Hour Preview

The preview provides complete access to the app for 24 hours.

The preview begins with the app’s first recorded installation or use, depending on the App Store environment.

The preview ended earlier than expected

Try the following:

  1. Confirm the device date and time are set automatically.
  2. Close and reopen the app.
  3. Confirm you are using the intended Apple Account.
  4. Remember that deleting and reinstalling the app does not guarantee a new preview.
  5. If Lifetime Access was previously purchased, tap Restore Purchases.

Changing the device clock will not legitimately extend the preview.

Lifetime Access

Lifetime Access is a one-time, non-consumable purchase. It permanently unlocks the complete app for the purchasing Apple Account.

There is no recurring subscription.

Purchase before the preview ends

Tap Unlock in the upper-right corner of the Library.

The Unlock button disappears after a verified purchase.

Purchase after the preview ends

When the preview expires, the Lifetime Access screen appears automatically. Tap the purchase button and follow Apple’s payment instructions.

Restore a previous purchase

  1. Open the Lifetime Access screen.
  2. Tap Restore Purchases.
  3. Make sure the device uses the Apple Account that originally purchased Lifetime Access.
  4. Wait for verification to finish.

You will not be charged again for restoring the same non-consumable purchase.

“No previous purchase was found”

Confirm that:

  • You are signed in with the Apple Account used for the original purchase.
  • The purchase was completed successfully.
  • The device has an internet connection.
  • App Store services are available.
  • You are restoring the production purchase, not an unrelated sandbox or TestFlight transaction.

If necessary, restart the device and try Restore Purchases again.

Purchase button remains on “Loading”

  • Confirm the device is online.
  • Open the App Store and verify that it loads.
  • Restart the app.
  • Restart the device.
  • Check Apple’s System Status page for App Store issues.
  • Try again later.

Billing and refund assistance

Purchases and refunds are processed by Apple. The developer cannot view complete payment details or directly issue App Store refunds.

Privacy and Local Data

The Philosopher’s Library does not require an account.

Bookmarks, study notes, reading position, and reader preferences are stored locally on the device.

Apple Intelligence passage processing occurs on compatible devices through Apple’s on-device Foundation Models framework. Questions are not sent to a developer-operated AI server.

Important backup notice

Deleting the app may permanently remove locally stored:

  • Bookmarks
  • Study notes
  • Reading position
  • Reader preferences

A restored Lifetime Access purchase unlocks the app again, but it does not restore locally deleted notes or bookmarks.

General Troubleshooting

If the app is not behaving as expected, try these steps in order:

  1. Confirm the device has sufficient free storage.
  2. Confirm iOS or iPadOS is up to date.
  3. Force-quit The Philosopher’s Library.
  4. Reopen the app.
  5. Restart the device.
  6. Confirm the app is updated through the App Store.
  7. Test the feature again.

Avoid deleting the app unless necessary because doing so may erase locally stored notes and bookmarks.
